Fallout: New Vegas coming in 2010!

Gamasutra reported that Obsidian Entertainment is going to be working on a new Fallout game for next year.

The big question is if it’s going to be as good as Fallout 3 was. It’s not like it hasn’t been done (a studio makes a good game and another studio does one of the sequels…if not all of the sequels) but what’s rare is when the other studio does a good or better job than the original studio.

As is usual in the game industry, it’s a small world and some of the original Fallout developers are actually at Obsidian (might also be why they wanted to do it so bad). We’ll have to see. I have a bad feeling they might dull it a bit. It might not be bad but it might not be quite as good as the original (Fallout 3).

A plus to the announcement, though, is how much Bethesda wanted everyone to know that it wouldn’t affect their own development work…which seems to imply they might be working on the sequel…hell, if Bethesda and Obsidian can tag team it and give us a Fallout game very year or two, it might be worth it! Unless, of course, they’re going to be more concerned with those TV and movie trademarks…Shh…Uwe Boll might be listening!!!

Here we go…

It seems Interplay felt it necessary to take it’s poor performance recently as a game developer and publisher and combine it with some greed to create a Fallout-based MMO. I mean, fuck sake, Bethesda puts out a great game that takes the Fallout universe into 3D and does a great job of it (hell, I feel like playing it through again which is unheard of for me with most RPGs) and Interplay decides to call a clause in it’s licensing agreement that essentially says, “if that shit makes cash money fall out of the sky, we’re going to fuck it good.”

Take a look at Interplay’s game library…most of them are games released YEARS ago!

And, did Interplay tap a company with some measure of experience putting together an MMO to help them out? Turbine? EA Mythic? NC Soft? Why would they do that? Let’s choose Masthead Studios! They’ve never made one…must be a good choice then!

Ugh…here’s hoping the project fails and either Bethesda decides to take it on and make it good or it just gets to stay hidden in a box buried six feet under…
